Titian

Titian was one of the leading painters of the high renaissance of the 16th century. His full name was Tiziano Vecellio. He was called Titian in English. There has been some confusion about his birth year. There is no solid reference to his exact birth year. But he was born around 1490 for sure. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, Italy. There is also no perfect reference for his parents or his early life.

At the age of 9, he went to Venice. He learned his early painting lessons from Gentile and Giovanni Bellini. Then he left Bellini brothers and studied under Giorgione. He worked there till 1510 until the death of Giorgione. The painting styles of Giorgione and Titian was so alike that someone can hardly tell the differences. He was also the pioneer or quick under-paintings instead of detailed under-drawings with a blank canvas. In 1510, he was commissioned first big work He painted the Scuola Del Santo in Padua. In 1513 he opened his own shop. Titian became the official painter to the Republic in 1516. He was also commissioned to paint the high altar in the Church of Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. After that work, he became very famous and earned his place around the renaissance artists. In 1525, Titian married Cecilia. After that, she died during childbirth. Titian’s two sons became his assistants. He became more famous when Emperor Charles V commissioned a series of portraits in 1530. The Emperor was so impressed with his work, that he gifted the Knighthood to Titian.

Titian created many masterpiece during his later years. His unique painting style is like giving life to pure emotion. His artwork inspired many artists after his life. This great painter died on August 27, 1576, because of the plague. He was almost 80 years old.
